Stand up and be counted

The president of Atheist Alliance International describes the opposition to Atheists being counted

On December 7th 2012 Atheist Alliance International launched an atheist census. I think as a group of like minded individuals we have the right to express ourselves and count our number within our community. Some people seemingly think that, is somehow out of order. The census was the victim of a denial of service attack after only 17 hours of being online and I and many others didn’t even get a look in. What have those outside of the atheist community got to fear exactly other than a rational world that denounces absurd ideologies and in some cases barbaric practices (recent focus on genital mutilation in Malaysia). I feel this is an affront to my right to freedom of expression, want to see the survey back online and be pushed out into the world.

Why did the attack happen? Well perhaps my past post (does God make us ignorant?) would shed some light onto why although this is merely conjecture on my part. What is true and demonstrable, however,  is that certain people the world over seem to want to ignore the fact that there are those out there that lead good lives without religion and would like to express themselves. Have a guess who they are. The same groups of people that would hold the species back from scientific advancement in many areas and humanistic equality just to preserve the status quo of an outdated and in many cases morally contemptible way of life. Atheists find the very notion of a supreme being as an insult to a rational human mind and with good reason. One such reason is that religions would have you believe that you are born a slave and must love your owner. Well I don’t recognise anybody as having a right to own me and I definitely don’t endorse any ideology that would tell me a fictional being owns me and thus I must live with regards to their man made principles because they know the mind of that fiction. There are many flaws in religion and that is just one of the most basic insults to human dignity. Personally I would like to avoid living in a world with such archaic belief, belief that permeates in society influencing governmental policy, the treatment of women and the education of our children as well as many other areas of life. The fact that modern atheists want to stand up and be counted to usher in a more rational and empathetic world should be greeted by all. Well at least those that love their fellow humans and want to live in peace with them in a state of mutual respect in order to better the world for everyone REGARDLESS of their brand of preferred fiction.

Please spread the word on religious intolerance and bigotry against those who just want to live as equals with empathy, rationality and love in their hearts and minds.
